Sooo, I had a hang-nail, eh I believe Tuesday morning. I pulled it off and didn't think to put a bandaid on it since it wasn't bleeding or anything. I went out with some gloves and I guess some fuzz got in it from the glove. It looked normal until perhaps Friday night when I noticed it getting a little infected. At that point I started putting neosporin and hydrogen peroxide on it fairly regularly.
The finger tip (my ring finger on my left hand) looked pretty bad on Saturday, but nothing outrageous.
Sunday morning it looked worse, my finger was swollen, and it was extremely tend. Oh, and before I left to work the nursery that morning I noticed it was pulsating.
Around 11 am I noticed a little bruise on my hand. It was maybe an inch below the middle finger knuckle, and was also a little pink. I'd say it was about two inches. I didn't remember hitting my hand on anything but I figured I must have. About 2pm, my finger was swollen to the point I couldn't get my engagement right off. Trey and his Dad decided my finger looked like a zombie finger lol. I went into work at 5:00 and we were really busy for like an hour straight, but when it did slow down I noticed the little pinky-red bruise continued up my forearm. I was like the fuck?! So I just showed Joy and kept working, but decided I'd go to the college health services tomorrow.
Right before closing I noticed it had grown even further up my arm, nearly to my armpit. Everyone at work was alarmed by the streak and said that was a bad sign and something you were always supposed to work for. They got me sent home maybe 15 minutes early to go to the ER. After arguing with my parents that I needed to go tonight because some of the people their thought it was blood poisoning and it appeared as though it was going to my heart, which would probably kill me, my sister agreed to take me. (She only did it because I was going to have to drive myself.)
All the nurses were surprised and alarmed by my arm. They did culture test ("not just the pink and blue but the whole rainbow" as the nurse said it lol, which meant they were testing for like everything. My white blood cell count came back normal so they were all puzzled. They sent me back to a room and I saw a doctor shortly who walked it, asked what was up, looked at it, and was like BAM this is what you have lol. So they hooked me up to an IV and gave my an antibiotic through that and I was sent free.
I have lymphangitis. It's an infection of the lymph vessels.
{From an online source: Lymphangitis is an infection of the lymphatic vessels, an important component of the immune system's filtration process, that is caused by a bacterial infection. If left untreated, lymphangitis can spread quickly throughout the bloodstream and is potentially fatal.} It does say though, it caught and treated properly it can be easily fixed. So I'll be on antibiotics for the next ten days and apply heat (which makes the already really hot finger, burn) to my finger.
And of course...
Pictures! The quality isn't the best because my batteries were about to die on my camera. I did finally pry my ring off my finger at the end of work, but it hurt like hell and took a lot of soapy water and work!
Anyways, one day of antibiotics down, nine more to go.
